version 1.2 of xcb-proto added python libraries, and a new check to configure.ac looking for python 2.5 specifically. Sounds like it really is a new dependency that needs to be added both to the XCB project page and the ebuild.
It's a real dep. Fixed, thanks for reporting. You should be able to have 2.4 and 2.5 installed at once, so you can keep your old thing going too.
