Currently, when Caps Lock is ON, ESC and backspace can be chosen as keybinding (with caps lock off it works properly). I attach the patch already accepted by upstream. Upstream only applied it to trunk, but it can be applied also in 2.22 and works ok (also, fedora is currently using it in fc9):
