Description Thomas Beierlein gentoo-dev 2008-06-09 14:51:07 UTC
media-libs/hamlib-1.2.6.1 is in the tree for 12 months now and works fine on x86.
It fixes the open bug 200597 which is valid only for 1.2.4 and 1.2.5.

Looks good to me (x86), no maintainer and (possibly) closes bug 2000597 mentioned in comment #0. Adding existing stable ARCHs to CC and I checked to make sure all deps are stable on requested ARCHs.

Adding myself to CC as well.
Comment 2 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-10 14:33:57 UTC
darkside / or last arch / or anyone touching this bug last, please clean up old versions and close QA bug 200597 after it. appericiated.

====amd64====

1. Compiles.
2. Installs, but the QA warnings are longer than my screen, which is ~130 lines long ;-)
3. It's two dependencies seem to function properly.

I didn't see any QA warnings on x86. If you suggest fixes, we can get them in there. ;)
Comment 5 Thomas Anderson (tanderson) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-10 22:25:29 UTC
The problems are all in hamlibpy_wrap.c.

The errors all look like this:

hamlibpy_wrap.c:3886: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules
hamlibpy_wrap.c:3908: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules
hamlibpy_wrap.c:12032: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules
hamlibpy_wrap.c:12084: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules
hamlibpy_wrap.c:12136: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules
hamlibpy_wrap.c:12188: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules

Oh, compiler warnings? Perhaps a dev more senior than I can suggest the proper way to take action (I always ignore them on my desktops =/ )
Comment 7 Thomas Beierlein gentoo-dev 2008-06-11 07:19:05 UTC
hamlibpy_wrap.c gets autogenerated by SWIG
Comment 8 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-12 15:45:54 UTC
Do you see the same warnings with 1.2.4? If it's not a regression, this bug ain't the right place.

Do you see the same warnings with 1.2.7.1? If the new version works better, we can
jump straight into it.

Either way, they are warnings, and this is a maintainer-needed package. Contact upstream, if any.
Comment 9 Thomas Beierlein gentoo-dev 2008-06-12 15:51:08 UTC
Discussion on SWIG mailing list and SWIG documentation states that the problem comes from the -fstrict-aliasing handling in new GCC's. It should be fixed by compiling the SWIG generated wrappers with -fno-strict-aliasing.

Contacted upstream yesterday with a patch.

In 1.2.7.1 the problem still exists.
Comment 10 Tobias Klausmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-15 10:16:58 UTC
Since the alpha team lacks the requisite hardware, we've pushed all stable versions of hamlib and its only keyworded dep (media-radio/tlf) back to ~alpha. I realize that hamlib is the sine qua non for HAM people, but we have absolutely no way of testing it. If you want it in alpha and have the hardware, feel free to volunteer as a tester. :)

If no-one complains in 30 days (or so), we'll consider dropping the keyword entirely.
Comment 11 Thomas Beierlein gentoo-dev 2008-06-15 17:28:57 UTC
While I can not comment if that ebuild is relevant for alpha users I would like to give some comments on usage and testing.

The package is used in addition to the mentioned media-radio/tlf also optional by media-radio/xdx and by at least 3 further ebuilds in sunrise.

Testing a library for control of ham radio equipment without that equipment can only be done partially. Hamlib supports around 200 different ham radio receivers and tranceivers (concentrated in around 20 backend libraries). So testing is also difficult for the upstream crew.

To overcome some of that problems there is a dummy backend, which simulates a real radio and is used by all programms 'by default'. Test of the frontend lib and the dummy backend can be done by the 'rigctl' program without any additional parameters.

For further infos have a look at the provided files in /usr/share/doc/hamlib...
and the rigctl man page.
Comment 12 Christian Faulhammer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-17 20:43:46 UTC
x86 stable, no hardware but all rdeps still build
Comment 13 Jeremy Olexa (darkside) (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2008-06-18 03:15:25 UTC
amd64 marked stable, proxy for gentoofan23. comment #3

Last arch, close bug.
