have dev-lang/python-2.4.4-r13 with "berkdb cxx examples gdbm ipv6 ncurses
readline ssl" use flags
"python threads" use flags are off.
all hippodraw use flags are off.

Could you please try emerging python with USE="threads" and see
if that helps?

With python with "threads" use flag hippodraw is normally emerged and works.

threads use flag to the ebuild.
