Description Julien 2008-05-29 17:04:43 UTC
With nvidia-drivers-173.14.05 and xorg-server-1.4.0.90-r3 it's crashing at starting of Xorg with an error on nvidia-tls.

The Xorg.0.log file

Here's my Xorg.0.log file when I have the 173.14.05 drivers.

I've reemerged the 169.12 to use Xorg and it's fine.
Comment 3 Tony Vroon (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-05-29 19:01:30 UTC
Things fall down just as GLX is loaded. Please use eselect opengl to switch away from nvidia to xorg-x11 and back again. This makes sure that the correct symlinks are in place.
I would like to see your X config as well.
Comment 4 Urs Joss 2008-05-30 06:15:43 UTC
This may be related with ACPI not being configured as nvidia expects it.

> This may be related with ACPI not being configured as nvidia expects it.

Generally that will result in the performance level being stuck on battery (this only affects PowerMizer) and an inability to notice brightness hotkeys or the display switch request.
It should not keep the driver from starting up (I've had this myself when I thought I had no legacy /proc/acpi requirements on my system)
Comment 6 Izad-Yar Daniel Rasheed 2008-06-01 14:45:30 UTC
I had the same problem as Julien and the same resolution. I don't have any ACPI in my kernel or on my system as I don't need it. Why should ACPI be required for nvidia-drivers? Is this a requirement for all future releases?

My Xorg.conf

Here's my Xorg.conf as requested. And don't think it's with ACPI that the problem comes because I never activated it. I don't need it.

My Xorg works great with 173.14.05

The new nvidia drivers work great with my Geforce 8800gts (g92). I noticed an FPS increase ppracer as well :)
Below is my emerge info for you to compare:

I also get that ACPI Warning:

II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GPU GART.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Unable to connect to the ACPI daemon; the ACPI daemon may not

(II) NVIDIA(0): Config Options in the README.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "nvidia-auto-select"
(II) Loading extension NV-GLX

But my system keeps on trucking...
The only real differences I see in our Xorg.conf the Dvorak keyboard. And that should make no difference :)
For you all who the new nvidia drivers arn't working for, you should post your kernel configuration. Perhaps that will shed light on this problem.
Comment 11 Harrison Metzger 2008-06-05 04:52:36 UTC
Looking more at this, I realized that I'm running xorg-server-1.3.0 while you both are at xorg-server-1.4.0. Would you be willing to revert back to an earlier xorg and see if this fixes the problem?
Comment 12 Izad-Yar Daniel Rasheed 2008-06-07 04:23:23 UTC
Sorry Harrison, X is a huge package and I'd rather not :/ The 173.08 drivers work fine for me and, while a bug, isn't terribly troublesome. Thanks for being so willing to look into it though!
Comment 13 Izad-Yar Daniel Rasheed 2008-06-12 11:55:48 UTC

Comment 15 Tony Vroon (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-14 15:12:16 UTC
I'm seeing some similarity with bug #215645 (not enough to close it as a duplicate). Do you notice anything in common in his emerge --info?
Comment 16 Izad-Yar Daniel Rasheed 2008-06-14 18:07:09 UTC
Nothing in his emerge --info is terribly similar to mine, but we're both running GeForce 6-series cards: his is a GeForce 6600 (NV43) and mine is a GeForce 6200 (NV44) which has the same 6600 architecture but fewer pipelines. Both ours are AGP 8x.

This package compiles against glibc-2.8-p20080602 (the other bug uses a much older version) just fine. I used the glibc-omitfp USE flag; not sure if that's relevant or not.

Good catch Ludovic, the upstream forum post would suggest that this bug hit others and has now been fixed. I have thanked you in the ebuild changelog :)
