Description Curtis Magyar 2003-06-01 12:38:29 UTC
The ebuild for enlightenment-0.16.5-r4 is quite old now. 0.16.5 does not
include X11 hinting for the EWMH specification here:
http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/wm-spec/1.3/html/

This makes enlightenment 0.16 appear very broken when running Gnome v2. The
tasklist applet doesn't correctly list the running applications, among many
other problems. It would appear that after 2 1/2 years, Kim Woelders has
championed the cause of maintaining 0.16 while the Rasterman and the others work
on e17. The current e16 cvs code is VERY usable in Gnome2, KDE, and all by
itself. Could someone please update the ebuild to Enlightenment 0.16.6-pre2

http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=151948

Or possibly correct the enlightenment-cvs ebuild to actually fetch the currently
supported version of Enlightenment? That ebuild should most certainly be called
e17-cvs or something like that, as it's a completely different code base, and
has completely different asperations from e16 which is commonly referred to as
"enlightenment", and e17 is referred to as "e17". However e17 is no more a
window manager than Gnome is, or KDE is, and probably shouldn't be in x11-wm
anyways.

Thanks very much.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge enlightenment
2.killall -9 metacity; enlightenment &
3.

Actual Results:
A version of Enlighenment that was released Oct 17, 2000 was installed which left
my Gnome desktop, and enlightenment horribly broken.

Expected Results:
Install a copy of e16's cvs, or one of the 0.16.6 pre releases

Changes to E16 since 0.16.5 was released:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/enlightenment/e16/e/ChangeLog?annotate=1.43

The code supporting EWMH hinting:

The Enlightentment news page which mentions a "possible" 0.16.6 release as
opposed to an imminent release.

The Enlightenment FAQ explaining that e17 is radically different from e16, and
that it is and will be incompatible with Gnome and KDE running as a desktop shell:
