Why so soon? Because I don't want to maintain GTK+-1.2 software, -r2 is using
GTK+-2.0 patch from Debian.

yeah, I've noticed.. but the tarball doesn't any more of them IIRC

You guessed right. And after correcting it the app opens and I can click a
letter. It then complains about sound files and DSP and exits.

Cannot initialize DSP


The sound files do exist and I can play them with for example aplay and
mplayer. 

Created an attachment (id=153261) [details]
Doesn't install sounds.. lame but wfm

-r2 is broken, so not interested.

GTK+-1.2 version removed, dropped stable ppc as it clearly isn't stable for
them (and I managed to crash it here as well, when sound device is busy by
other application)

The app is using OSS.. and I'm honestly not going to spend more time with it.
