your boot output wont be terribly relevant then ... make sure you have "mdraid" in your boot runlevel when using baselayout-2 i'll add warnings to the openrc ebuild
He also should put device-mapper in the boot runlevel. mdadm & device-mapper ebuilds warn about sticking them into the run level as well.
