Now, after a bit more reading and some testing, I'm almost sure were does this problem come from. As of version 2.2, one of the line of libtool init macro is: m4_pattern_forbid([^_?LT_[A-Z_]+$]) This means that i.e. LT_AGE is not allowed as a variable name, unless it's either explicitly m4_pattern_allow'ed or is AC_SUBST'ed (which does, among others m4_pattern_allow(^$1$) ).
i'd like to wait and see how upstream fixes this.
