Currently, vmd-1.8.6 fails to compile against tcltk-8.5.
I'll have to look into this in some more detail to
see if I can come up with a patch.

I just committed a fix to portage that
should allow vmd-1.8.6 to properly work with 
tcltk-8.5.

That fix doesn't work with 1.8.7?  Or the fix in this case is tk[-truetype] ?

vmd-1.8.7 will compile against either tk-8.4 or 8.5. In case of the
latter truetype breaks some of the vmd apps which is why it is 
disabled.
