for some reason or another, audacity 1.3.4-r1 starts JACK when it is loading. As a result, JACK occupies ALSA and audacity can no longer access ALSA. can you check if -r2 or -r3 solves this ?
Updating my portage tree showed that -r3 resolves this. Audacity works perfectly now. Version -r3 uses a newer wxGTK, and it features a jack useflag. I guess -r3 should be the stable release, not -r1.

[Solved]: The problem was the "-fvisibility-inlines-hidden" CXX flag in "wxGTK-2.8". After reemerging "wxGTK-2.8" without this flag, "audacity-1.3,4-r3" compiles fine. Just take a look at http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=127020
