This version is needed in order to support linux-2.6.24. Has only been in the tree for a couple of days, but the incoming test reports look good (so do my own tests), and tentative stable date for 2.6.24-sources seems to be feb 29th now. Many thanks
x86 will wait some more days to give more testing
Here we go for x86

Created attachment 144791 [details] emerge --info on a slightly different ppc (7400, 2007.0 profile) Also had no luck with ppc32 as reported by nixnut in #3. Same error (can attached if desired). Attached is emerge --info since I have a slightly different environment (profile, etc).
this is ppc64. the afs module won't load here. is anyone seeing this problem with 2.6.23.16/2.6.24.3? maybe on another arch? # dmesg |tail -n 2 libafs: module license 'http://www.openafs.org/dl/license10.html' taints kernel. libafs: Unknown symbol do_signal but do_signal is definelty *there*: # readelf -s /boot/kernel-2.6.23.16 |grep do_signal 31954: c0000000005ef3b8 24 FUNC GLOBAL DEFAULT 23 do_signal 45966: c000000000010a18 724 FUNC GLOBAL DEFAULT 1 .do_signal # readelf -s /boot/kernel-2.6.24.3 |grep do_signal 33417: c000000000657510 24 FUNC GLOBAL DEFAULT 23 do_signal 48112: c0000000000110d8 724 FUNC GLOBAL DEFAULT 1 .do_signal any magical foo needed to make the do_signal function useable on extern modules?
(In reply to comment #5) > this is ppc64. the afs module won't load here. is anyone seeing this problem > with 2.6.23.16/2.6.24.3? maybe on another arch? haven't seen this problem myself yet. but it might be worth checking whether net-fs/openafs-kernel-1.4.7-pre1 is having the same problem?
To build with 2.6.24, I also had to add KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 before building the kernel module.
Whoops, wrong bug, sorry! I'll test this on ppc64 and get back to you though!
The missing do_signal symbol was broken by Christoph Hellwig with this patch: http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/linuxppc/patch?id=11388 2.6.23 was probably also broken (I never tried it on ppc64, so I can't say). We'll have to fight it out with him, but I've not had any luck convincing him that MOL's symbols were needed either, so ... 1.4.7_pre2 also has this problem, but fixes the missing xtime symbol. Ideas?
(In reply to comment #9) > The missing do_signal symbol was broken by Christoph Hellwig with this patch: > http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/linuxppc/patch?id=11388 Is this something the CONFIG_UNUSED_SYMBOLS kernel config option could fix? (I seem to be using this on all my systems, maybe it needs to be a requirement)
Kind reminder, 2.6.24 has been stable since halfway march.
(In reply to comment #11) > Kind reminder, 2.6.24 has been stable since halfway march. whoops, amd64 stable.
Speaking for alpha, Stefaan you know you have our blessing to keyword openafs as usual (if you still have the hardware). Thanks.
No, CONFIG_UNUSED_SYMBOLS won't fix this. The problem is that the symbol is no longer exported.
Any progress on that bug? I'm still getting nixnuts (#3) failure with 1.4.7 and gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r3 which kinda blocks me testing sci-physics/root...

Tested version 1.4.7 and stabled on alpha.
I really have no clue what I can do to fix this on ppc. So unless someone else pops up with some assistance or bright idea, I'm inclined to mark this "CANTFIX"...
Like I said previously, until you can convince Hellwig to stop being a tool and removing kernel symbols that GPL software is using, this won't be fixed on ppc/ppc64. :( I haven't looked into the possibility of fixing this in OpenAFS, but if it's anything like the symbols he removed that broke MOL, it's probably not trivial. I'd like to keep it open for now, if I get the chance, I need the reminder to look into writing a patch to fix it.
