Description Sébastien Wilmet 2008-02-15 23:42:36 UTC
When gdm stops , there is a warning message (from /var/log/syslog) :

Feb 15 00:45:47 localhost gdm[4716]: WARNING: main daemon: Got SIGABRT. Something went very wrong. Going down!

An other strange thing -- which is probably linked with the warning -- is that when shutting down directly from Gnome (System -> Shutting Down), the messages on the framebuffer don't appear ("Swith to runlevel 0", etc). If I close the session first, and then shutting down from gdm, that's OK.

Some information about my system :

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Shut down the system : directly from Gnome, or from gdm.
2.There is a warning message.

On my boxes it appears to be fixed by recent updates could you try again (no need to move to gnome-2.22 though)
Comment 2 Sébastien Wilmet 2008-03-25 22:16:01 UTC
The recent updates doesn't work fine for me :

shutdown[4999]: shutting down for system halt
init: Switching to runlevel: 0
gdm[5014]: CRITICAL: gdm_connection_close: assertion `conn != NULL' failed
last message repeated 2 times
kernel: gdm[5014]: segfault at 23feac94 eip b73a7759 esp bf8ab680 error 4
gdm[3779]: WARNING: gdm_cleanup_children: child 5014 crashed of signal 11

Comment 3 Philipp Leonhardt 2008-06-01 21:01:09 UTC
Same her for me.
Errors on shutting down from gnome.
The Framebuffer switches into verbose mode cause of that and this is annoying me.
Comment 4 Matthew Joiner 2008-07-14 07:47:11 UTC
I get this too, sometimes mixed with:
May 11 02:20:13 stanley /etc/init.d/xdm[22008]: start-stop-daemon: fopen `/var/run/gdm.pid': No such file or directory
May 11 02:20:13 stanley syslog-ng[1862]: Termination requested via signal, terminating;
Comment 5 Marcin Kurek 2008-07-17 16:21:08 UTC
Same troubles here I am affraid. 2008.0 profile on amd64 and Gnome 2.22 Removing all files from ~/.metacity/sessions and ~/.nautilus seems to cure the crash on reboot/shoutdown, but message about missing .pid is still there I am affraid.
Comment 6 Marcin Kurek 2008-07-27 09:11:04 UTC
It seems that http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=517526 can be same issue.
Comment 7 Marcin Kurek 2008-08-15 08:25:54 UTC
Patch from post http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=517526#c61 fixed this problem for me. It seems it's not perfect solution, but better than a crash on each reboot/shoutdown.

please test 2.20.8, it should fix your problems. If not, please reopen this bug.
