something is seriously screwed up if 89 out of 91 tests failed on your system.
please post `emerge --info` whenever you post a build test failure. i would
also review the current stable e2fsprogs and see if it gives the same behavior.

ERROR: preinst
This package will overwrite one or more files that may belong to other
packages (see list below). You can use a command such as `portageq
owners / <filename>` to identify the installed package that owns a
file. If portageq reports that only one package owns a file then do
NOT file a bug report. A bug report is only useful if it identifies at
least two or more packages that are known to install the same file(s).
If a collision occurs and you can not explain where the file came from
then you should simply ignore the collision since there is not enough
information to determine if a real problem exists. Please do NOT file
a bug report at http://bugs.gentoo.org unless you report exactly which
two packages install the same file(s). Once again, please do NOT file
a bug report unless you have completely understood the above message.

package sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.40.5 NOT merged

this bug has nothing to do with 1.40.5. please open new bug reports in the
future rather than commenting on unrelated ones. that said, the bug you quote
has already been fixed in cvs.

After this morning's emerge --sync:

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "~sys-libs/ss-1.40.4" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- sys-libs/ss-1.40.4 (masked by: corruption)

------- Comment #10 From SpanKY 2008-01-29 17:08:30 0000 -------
still unrelated ... file a new bug. it's most likely a transient error
anyways.

AMD64:

all three compile without errors, e2fsprogs tests all pass (with -static &
static), and can create & check filesystems without problems
