------- Comment #6 From Norberto Bensa 2008-01-27 02:47:29 0000 -------
workaround (works for me):
mv alsa-driver-1.0.15.ebuild to alsa-driver-1.0.16_rc1.ebuild
ebuild alsa-driver-1.0.16_rc1.ebuild digest
emerge alsa-driver

Confirmed here as well, version bumping to "alsa-driver-1.0.16_rc1.ebuild"
solves the bug.

------- Comment #15 From Jan Buecken 2008-02-10 22:53:42 0000 -------
Confirming, and the hint of Norberto Bensa , comment 11, solves the bug, but in
my case the ebuild must copied to "alsa-driver-1.0.16-rc1.ebuild", not
"alsa-driver-1.0.16_rc1.ebuild". I think its a typing error???
Hint: I use a portage-overlay, where I copied the ebuild to, otherwise "emerge
--sync" will delete it... the most of you know it, I only want to recall it
(e.g for newbies, who look for help here, like me sometimes).

------- Comment #16 From Rob Couto 2008-02-11 23:46:15 0000 -------
Had this problem but simply went back to in-kernel driver. That's fine anyway,
because without ALSA in kernel I don't get to add saa-7134-alsa for saa-7134
based HDTV card. snd-usb-audio is working again, so it's all good.

alsa-driver-1.0.15-linux-2.6.24.patch

http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-driver/rev/3d4436dbea1c

Tested with sys-kernel/tuxonice-sources-2.6.24-r2 (~amd64)

I would prefer a version bump to alsa-1.0.16 ;-)

------- Comment #19 From Tassilo Horn 2008-02-21 11:48:27 0000 -------
Yes, a bump would be the best. I don't understand why all alsa-packages
(alsa-{libs,headers,tools,utils}) have version 1.0.16_rc1 or 1.0.16_rc2 in
portage, but only alsa-driver is stuck at 1.0.15.

Maybe someone just forgot to check it in?

------- Comment #20 From Tassilo Horn 2008-02-22 08:30:33 0000 -------
I've heard that the ebuild isn't provided because the alsa-devs got a huge mass
of bug reports from Gentoo users using the most recent version, and they would
prefer only getting bug reports concerning the in-kernel version.

But many users rely on new drivers for chipsets that aren't supported by the
driver that comes with the kernel.

So I'd suggest to simply add a message to the alsa-driver ebuild which tells
users not to file bug reports at the alsa bugtracker. (Some other ebuilds do
the same.)

Well, that's complete nonsense. The fact is that the *Gentoo* alsa maintainers
have a strong dislike for out-of-the-kernel alsa drivers, so the ebuild is
kinda ignored.

Yeah, indeed, alsa-drivers ebuild is still needed but that message doesn't seem
to make it to the right ears.

This doesn't make much sense as I have sent some bugs to alsa bugtracker (both
affecting to me and others affecting to some mandriva users) and they usually
asks you (or, at least, asks me ;-P ) to test with latest alsa version. For
example, some months ago I had a problem with my hda intel soundcard that was
fixed in 1.0.15 alsa version when kernel still had a 1.0.14* version.

Also, common distributions like fedora, opensuse, mandriva and ubuntu patch its
kernels for including the last alsa drivers

------- Comment #23 From Josh Saddler 2008-03-05 09:20:46 0000 -------
I removed the alsa-driver configuration from the ALSA Guide[1] per the
long-standing request from the ALSA/kernel maintainers. bug 183418 has the
info.

Consider this one fewer obstacle to removing the unmaintained, broken,
showstopping crap that is alsa-driver.

Removing alsa-driver doesn't make any sense as gentoo-sources doesn't include a
full updated alsa version. Please reconsider

Unless this bug will be marked "WONTFIX" I do not see the relevance of stating
this here?

> Consider this one fewer obstacle to removing the unmaintained, broken,

It is unmaintained because the kernel folks could not work together with the
previous maintainer. Who always had a version of alsa-driver in the tree that
worked with the newest kernel releases.

alsa-driver 1.0.16 in the tree

Please note that this package is unsupported by the ALSA team, and will only
receive limited support from myself. In-kernel driver support is recommend and
supported.

If you have issues with this package, do not assign bugs to the alsa team, but
instead to myself (beandog@gentoo.org). Also do not reopen this bug if you
have problems, instead create a new one.

Thanks
