Shouldn't this depend on mldonkey?  I don't see how I can get it running
without it.  Or perhaps you can suggest another method?

True, but MLDonkey can run on a remote machine so net-p2p/mldonkey
should not be a dependency of any GUI to be used for MLDonkey
