ok. clarification. both machines (amd64 and ppc64) run paludis. I'll try with portage on the failing machine.
yes, fails with portage, too: !!! dobin: ttf2pfb/.libs/ttf2pfb does not exist !!! dobin: ttf2pk/.libs/ttf2pk does not exist !!! dobin: ttf2pk/.libs/ttf2tfm does not exist !!! dobin: ttfbanner/.libs/ttfbanner does not exist the executables are in ttf2pfb/ttf2pfb again. ".libs" directories are empty.
are they the actual executables? just looking at this here and in freetype1-contrib/ttf2pk I do have ttf2pk and ttf2tfm but they're libtool wrapper scripts.

unfortunately not. the codebase was abandoned for version 2 many years ago. i just happened to notice that cvs had a lot of fixes that never saw a release.
