I can reproduce this on my x86 box, but not on my core2duo box (~amd64)

I've reverted that change in SVN
This issue can be resolved by creating symlink i386 -> x86 in genkernel dir
additionaly you need to set arch override to i386 this issue solves cross compiling issue
Problem also exists in genkernel-3.4.9_pre8
This is fixed in 3.4.9_pre9, which was just added to the tree.
