Bug 153441 supposedly addressed this issue in 2006.

virtual/opengl is merged, but I still get the error, see attached build.log and
emerge --info

I determined that media-libs/mesa is also a dependency. emerging it fixed this
issue, attached updated ebuild

it was just missing virtual/glu.  fixed in CVS.
