APNG support is required by current Firefox trunk and will be required for Firefox 3. Fixing the bug means applying (and maybe forward-porting) the patch from here: http://littlesvr.ca/apng/
let upstream sort it out
also, my reading of the situation is: - libpng guys dont want it - mozilla has integrated it so a libpng with apng support would not be required for newer mozilla builds ...

Just for the record, there's http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdubapngmod/files/ where you can find latest apng patches with a mirror at http://littlesvr.ca/apng/ I'm using apng-enabled libpng ebuilds for more than a year now and never had problems. If you want to test them, just pull my overlay from rsync://gentoofan.no-ip.org/poly-c
A USE flag that would add APNG support by applying the patches would be nice. I don't think it would be difficult to do that.

well you're in luck ... i personally found a desire to have this functionality, so ive added a USE=apng flag to libpng to add support for it. http://sources.gentoo.org/media-libs/libpng/libpng-1.4.7.ebuild?r1=1.1&r2=1.2 http://sources.gentoo.org/media-libs/libpng/libpng-1.5.2.ebuild?r1=1.1&r2=1.2
