/usr/share/mplayer/mplayer.conf points to /etc/mplayer.conf
It should be /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf

BTW, according to ChangeLog, mplayer has created the wrong symlink since version 1.0_rc2_pre20070321-r4 and has no problem at all. Is it necessary?

Doh, thanks for reporting.  Fixed in 1.0.20070814
