The application installs correctly, but does not run, even as root. I didn't have time to go trace someone else's Perl/Tk script to see where the disconnect was; any tips on running?

Right, that almost works. But since it has a hardcoded list of perl versions which does not include 5.8.8 (nor 5.10) it fails. If anyone manages to patch that up I can commit the fixes, but I fear if I look at that build system I'll get very sad, so I leave it to more talented people ;)
Created attachment 183785 [details] updated ebuild What an awful customized install process. It's a single shell script with the actual components uuencoded and embedded within. The ebuild itself is broken because the perl-tk version portage sees (804.028-r1) differs from what Perl itself reports (804.028). A simple (but fragile) fix is to change line 30 to: export PERLTK_VER=${PERLTK_VER:17:7} The installer & app themselves are... "interesting". Lots of hard-coded paths, assumptions of running as root (modprobe from a Perl script?), etc. I think it's a good start but could use a lot of work, for which I do not currently have the time; definitely not going into my forensic toolchest right now. The app also complains at runtime if any of the optional support binaries (cryptcat, dcfldd, etc.) are missing. Might as well just add an RDEPEND for them and get over it, since most users will probably have these or use for them anyway. I don't see the mentioned hardcoded Perl dependencies (5.8.8/5.10) in 1.2.8, and it seems to run fine now with perl-tk-804.028-r1 on amd64. I've attached a modified 1.2.8 ebuild to reflect the 3 changes: KEYWORDS, PERLTK_VER, and RDEPEND. YMMV.
