I've just upgraded to gentoo-sources 2.6.20-r6 and alsa-driver 1.0.14_rc2 emerge fails. Same with alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc2-r1.
Thanks for reporting. I'll try and find time to look at this soon. For the time being, you could switch to the in-kernel ALSA drivers. Those would actually be my personal recommendation anyway, since they are never susceptible to the type of bug you have reported here.

What is the advantage to the gentoo module? I know it is potentially more up to date, but with an old and stable soundcard that probably makes no difference, right?
In my opinion there aren't any advantages of the external one, while our kernel is kept up to date. Some others disagree. The external version may be slowly phased out as nobody is giving it the attention it needs right now (maintaining a large kernel codebase outside the kernel is really hard).

assuming you have selected the core2duo kernel profile: try upgrading alsa-driver to 1.0.14-rc3 or apply this patch: http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=112847 worked for me.
anyone?
Please try Jurek's suggestion in comment #7 and reopen the bug if 1.0.14-rc3 does not build for you.
I'm using Pentium III and alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc2-r1 fails to build against vanilla-sources-2.6.21.6. So, this is not an issue just with Core2Duo profile. Well, I'm going to try the alsa-driver-1.0.14 version. Bug 176278 is trying to stabilize this version.
