Before compiling enlightenment I checked out 'emerge -p' to see what is going to be installed into my gentoo-linux. I noticed that even if I had USE="-esd" selected esound support would be compiled in. Since I don't need/want my WM of choice to have sound support I modified the ebuild to contain 'esd? ()' around esound. enlightenment compiles and runs stable with this changes PLUS you don't need to have esound as an dependency. Can you make this change to future ebuilds of enlightenment???
