Zsh misses EDITOR variable because /etc/zsh/zprofile have no code within to
extract EDITOR from /etc/rc.conf like /etc/profile one:

[ -z "$EDITOR" ] && EDITOR="`. /etc/rc.conf 2>/dev/null; echo $EDITOR`"
[ -z "$EDITOR" ] && EDITOR="/bin/nano"
export EDITOR

I'm using (on x86 stable) zsh-4.2.5.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Check you haven't set EDITOR manually or sources /etc/profile somewhere in
zsh configuration files (Eight! zshenv,zprofile,zshrc,zlogin both global and
local)
2. Fire up zsh
3. echo $EDITOR

Unset:  CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS,
PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS

Thanks for the bug report. 
I copied the lines from /etc/profile to /etc/zprofile.
