I confirm this on amd64.

Could this have anything to do with what is said in HACKING.txt and CHANGES.txt
in /usr/share/doc/enigma-1.00/

I've done this:
# ln -s  /usr/share/games/enigma /usr/share/

The linking solved the problem for me as well. I guess that the compat.lua that
comes with Enigma isn't found in PATH or something similar.

Try running it under strace:

strace -o out enigma

and attach the out file as text/plain.  reopen with that.

Created an attachment (id=104901) [details]
strace -o out enigma

Atached the "strace -o out enigma". Reopen.

It's that sed in the ebuild.

As a work around until it's fixed, you can emerge with USE=-nls

Sucks if you want other langs, but it'll get it running for you in the
meantime.
