Description:   Opened: 2006-12-20 13:42 0000
As the kernel team wants to stable kernel 2.6.19 in a few weeks, let's start to
test and make sure that ALSA is in a decent state to do this.

This bug will also serve as tracker for the issues that needs to be worked on
before it gets stable (on some arches at least like AMD64 and x86, just to call
a few).

The stable targets are:

media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc1 (it has the ALSA_CARDS USE expansion, and
thus requires sane defaults set on profile for the stabling arches)
media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.14_rc1
media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14_rc1 (it won't have the PCM_PLUGINS stuff, be calm)
media-sound/alsa-firmware-1.0.14_rc1
media-sound/alsa-tools-1.0.14_rc1
media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.14_rc1
media-sound/alsa-plugins-1.0.14_rc1-r1 (this is highly important for alpha
amd64 arm ppc ppc64 sh sparc and x86, as I'm going to deprecate alsa-jack one
for all after this stabilisation is done, and get rid of it).

and of course

app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs-${VERSION_THAT_HASN'T_BEEN_PREPARED_YET},
without which all the 32-bit only software like almost all the proprietary
games and Wine and Skype will be dead... very good luck AMD64 team, on this.

Correction: media-plugins/alsa-plugins

On x86:
=media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc1
=media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.14_rc1
=media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14_rc1
=media-sound/alsa-tools-1.0.14_rc1
=media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.14_rc1
=media-plugins/alsa-plugins-1.0.14_rc1-r1

emerge fine and pass tests, seem to work fine.

Thanks Alex, you're right, it's the wrong category for alsa-plugins :)

Thomas, that sounds like profiling problems (gcda), can you open a separate bug
for that?

------- Comment #4 From Thomas Sachau 2006-12-21 13:09:01 0000 -------
ok, created a separate bug for my problem:

all the mentioned packages emerge on x86, pass collision test and work here.

oh nvm about my last post, its cause I mounted /lib/modules to my chroot...I'm
such an idiot. It merged fine when I unmounted it, and passed all tests.

On x86 and amd64 this is needed as stable to make anyone with a conexant based
hda-intel card work properly. All previous versions don't adjust the
amplifier, only the main volume. Can this be rushed for x86 and amd64? They
appear to be stable.

FYI:

I had some problems trying to ALSA packages 1.0.14_rc1
to work with gentoo-sources-2.6.19-gentoo-r5

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-539063.html

------- Comment #21 From Leonid Kabanov 2007-02-14 04:18:58 0000 -------
From alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc1 ebuild's pkg_setup:

    # By default, drivers for all supported cards will be compiled.
    # If you want to only compile for specific card(s), set ALSA_CARDS
    # environment to a space-separated list of drivers that you want to build.
    # For example:
    #
    # env ALSA_CARDS='emu10k1 intel8x0 ens1370' emerge alsa-driver
    #

How can I compile _all_ drivers without copying ebuild's IUSE_CARDS to
ALSA_CARDS and without patching
/usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/$ARCH/make.defaults before each emerge?

------- Comment #22 From Josh Saddler 2007-02-15 09:47:38 0000 -------
Diego, when you removed the alsa-headers-1.0.12 ebuild, you broke the manifest.
I just synced a few minutes ago, and emerge -uD world gives the following error
when it starts the alsa-headers update (note that 1.0.13 is installed, stable
amd64 system):

# emerge -uD world
Calculating world dependencies... done!

>>> Emerging (1 of 45) media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.14_rc1 to /
!!! A file is not listed in the Manifest:
'/usr/portage/media-sound/alsa-headers/alsa-headers-1.0.12.ebuild'

Please look into this, thanks. Right now updating world is completely blocked.

------- Comment #23 From Josh Saddler 2007-02-15 11:16:58 0000 -------
(In reply to comment #22)
And if it wasn't Diego, then someone else touched the file after him.
Re-syncing and re-emerging metadata hasn't made it go away. I'm just going by
what looks like the last person who touched the file.

turns out it's a weird portage problem; never mind -- not an alsa issue (yay!)
so disregard. /me sends the mafia after the portage devs...

------- Comment #26 From Leonid Kabanov 2007-02-22 03:46:14 0000 -------
Nobody answer so I try to explain problem. ALSA_CARDS now is in arch defaults
so I cannot just comment it out in make.conf. ALSA_CARDS="all" doesn't work.
Please remove comments from pkg_setup function or mark bug #158680 as invalid
and undo all changes or add this functionality somehow.

This is a keywording bug, not a support forum. Move to forums.gentoo.org or
#gentoo.

------- Comment #28 From Daniel Drake 2007-04-27 00:06:20 0000 -------
As there's only one bug left and it's only waiting on 1 arch (and probably not
going anywhere soon) I'll close this tracker.
