Description Ioannis Aslanidis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-12-08 07:17:50 UTC
It would be great if we added Gentoo branding to the KDE login splash. Let this bug help with tracking the best way to do it, so that it does not harm users that refuse to have Gentoo branding.

The current proposed way is to use the vanilla flag to prevent the installation/use of custom branding.

Splash with Gentoo branding for KDE 3.5

This splash images should be bug-free. Please, test if you have the time. Feedback is welcome.

I'd like to have some users to test this.

Btw, I also was advised by 'jakub' to use the 'branding' USE flag.

Any comments and ideas will be helpful!

Tested, works fine. Few comments:

- preview does not reflect actual appearance
- the archive contains vim's .swp file
- branding USE flag is IMHO a good thing; vote++

My overall opinion: nice work!
Comment 4 Alex 2007-01-06 06:32:50 UTC
I'd love to see this with USE="branding".

Please, also be so kind to give your opinion in the following forums thread:

Looks nice, I guess it is in line with the live cd.
I guess even if it is not set up as the default theme
it would be nice to install it or to provide a separate ebuild
to install it. Some people like switching theme (my wife does
that an awfull lot, artwork staying the same for a long time
is boring according to her :) ).

And yes the preview should reflect the content wich it doesn't
at the moment.

I will test soon but I think this is a great idea. We thought about this a few years ago but the opinion seemed to be that we shouldn't brand it as that is/was not the Gentoo way.

I think it should be applied with the branding USE flag and set as the default if the branding USE flag is set. I agree that the preview should match the theme but I am sure you will take care of that. Great work!
Comment 8 Volker Hemmann 2007-01-10 02:49:13 UTC
I really don't think that (ab)using the vanilla flag is the right choice for this:

vanilla - Do not add extra patches which change default behaviour; DO NOT USE THIS ON A GLOBAL SCALE as the severity of the meaning changes drastically

that does not sound well.

Create a 'branding' flag and default to off, if you have to.

Comment 9 Carsten Lohrke (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-03-31 14:48:13 UTC
We have already a branding use flag for this purpose. I don't mind adding it, with the next release or when there is a good reason to do a revision bump.

While I personally dislike and won't enabled it, what I'm a bit puzzled about is, if there is a concerted effort by those who are fond of branding. If every maintainer (group) has his (its) very own idea of what should the design be like, the overall result will look like shit.

Current packages featuring the flag are

app-office/openoffice
dev-util/eclipse-sdk
gnome-base/gnome-session
x11-misc/xscreensaver

I propose that those who are fond of branding team up and coordinate, before we do something about it.

It's not the time yet. We have to sort out a few more things. We can go ahead without adding it for now.
Comment 11 Marcus D. Hanwell (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-07-15 22:04:23 UTC
Has this been abandoned for now? I would like to see some branding controlled by a USE flag as suggested. I think if the branding USE flag is set then it should be the default. Talking to people at conferences etc indicates that people are receptive to it.

I do agree that this should remain as consistent as is reasonable across various branded applications. I don't think we have to stick to the exact same style across everything but a consistent look would make Gentoo installations look far more sleek and polished.
Comment 12 Ioannis Aslanidis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-07-16 05:16:18 UTC
What we should do now is define which applications will be themed and then create a contest and call for themes. This way, submitters will have to give a full theme pack for all of them, in order to prevent the problems that experienced www-redesign.
Comment 13 Marcus D. Hanwell (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-07-16 15:38:18 UTC
It sounds like a big task still. I thought if we had decent artwork it would be good to use it now rather than spending months on a contest. The results of a project like that could of course replace the artwork we used in the shorter term. I am not an artist though and so can't do a great deal but so long as it is all reasonably consistent I think it will look good. Apps coded using different graphical libraries will look different anyway.

This is not something I am desperate to do but see no reason to hold back if we have some branding artwork available. Otherwise this bug should be closed as later etc until such a time as we have the artwork to use.
Comment 14 Ioannis Aslanidis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-07-17 21:09:26 UTC
Well, the idea was to discuss this with the forums team and devrel and see what we can get. I asked a couple of times how to organize it all and what steps to follow, but it looked like it was all up to me.

You guys can try to get some extra info from devrel, might that help. The forums team will gladly help :)

Let's re-open this one when we have the organisational stuff done.

It would rock, if we had, (and maybe there is, but no one I have talked to in IRC knows about it) a package or use flag that put the live dvd kde branding into an installed gentoo-kde system. I am proud I use Gentoo (hence my wallpaper is the my linux can beat up your linux), it would be great to have, insteadof the K a the Gentoo G, like on the live cd, a whole kde theme, made by Gentoo, the official one.
