I found the symlinks generation in genkernel (when using --symlink) to not be appropriate for my use.  Attached is a patch (against genkernel-3.4.1) I use to get symlinking a little more robust.  I couldn't find a forum for discussion of genkernel, so I'm posting this here.  Please redirect me if this should be submitted somewhere else.

I've added this to subversion and it will show up in 3.4.5 or better.

Added to 3.4.5 which should be hitting the tree soon.
