darwinia and darwinia-demo are nearly unplayable on my system. the demo freezes
every minute for at least 10 seconds, letting bursts of sound through. the full
version is worse, often freezing without recovery.

i'm guessing glibc-2.4's different threading may be responsible.

darwinia v1.3.0 -> v1.4.0b9

darwinia v1.4.0b9 runs without the performance problems i reported for v1.3.0.
it also has some other bug fixes.

1.3.0 played fine on my machine so it isnt a nptl issue
