There seems to be a fair bit of redundancy in /etc/skel/.bashrc. Since /etc/bash/bashrc gets sourced directly for 'regular' shells[1] and indirectly for login shells through /etc/profile some parts of /etc/skel/.bashrc become redundant. For instance, ls and grep get aliased twice. IMO this situation could use some cleaning: if we are using a global bashrc, why not move the contents of /etc/skel/.bashrc there? For now we have a situation in which most settings are made in /etc/bash/bashrc but support for ~/.dir_colors and the setting of x terminals' titles is only present in /etc/skel/.bashrc. [1] As a side note, this behaviour could prehaps be better documented. Afaik, only /etc/profile hints at it.
While your in there, can I draw your attention to this bug: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151575 I'm having a problem setting up a global path for non-interactive shells that are using subversion. I'd prefer to do a global path rather than set each users .bashrc file as there are oooodles of them ;-) There is a possible fix on this bug report too :-)
fixed in cvs, cheers
