Description:   Opened: 2006-09-14 03:16 0000
On Dell Inspiron 6400 with ipw3945 wireless card, I emerged
net-wireless/ieee80211-1.2.15 and rebooted to load new drivers. the system
locked up completely near the end of the boot process (Setting up gdm).
Retried 4 times. Same outcome. Downgraded to previous stable version
1.1.13-r1 and all worked properly as before.

I could find nothing unusual in the logs.

Which ipw3945 version is that ?

Also, this could be a possible duplicate of bug #146715.

I posted #146715 it seems it is in fact ieee80211 which is in cause
same freeze here with 1.1.14 & 1.2.15 (why is there a jump from 1.1.14 to
1.2.15 ?)

UPSTREAM decided to do that sort of bump (I've no clue why). Anyway this should
be fixed with ipw3945-1.1.0-r1 (just commited that), which has a fixed
[R]DEPEND upon ieee80211-1.1.13-r1.

My ipw3945 works fine using it with ieee80211-1.2.15. I don't have this
problem.

Which net-wireless/ieee80211 version are you using ?

------- Comment #11 From Magnus Ahlberg 2006-10-02 06:10:42 0000 -------
For me ipw3945 works fine with ieee80211-1.1.14-r1, I first let the ebuild
downgrade as it wanted but I have really bad disconnection issues with 1.1.13
so I dared to upgrade to 1.1.14-r1 again wich previously solved the problem and
everything works great, I've never seen any lock down during boot. The problem
must lie elswhere than ieee80211. Until the hard dependency is removed, is
there an easy way to bypass this or do I have to create an overlay and a
modified ebuild?

------- Comment #12 From x1 2006-11-11 10:37:39 0000 -------
I had this same problem with my ipw3945d. I have all packages unmasked
(ACCEPT_KEYWORKDS="~x86").

When I ran "emerge -av iee80211 ipw3945", both iee80211-1.2.15 AND
iee80211-1.13-r1 appeared in the list, along with ipw9345-1.1.0-r1. (I believe
ipw3945d-1.1.0-r1 hard depends on net-wireless/ieee80211-1.1.13-r1). After
letting that install anyway, my laptop completely hardlocks about 2 seconds
after starting ipw3945d.

After rebooting, I removed all of those packages, added
">net-wireless/ieee80211-1.1.13-r1" to /etc/portage/package.mask, and
re-emerged iee80211 and ipw3945. With _only_ iee80211-1.1.13-r1 installed,
everything works fine.

------- Comment #13 From David Li 2006-12-30 15:54:43 0000 -------
Something really weird happened to me eariler today and this is the only bug
that looks close.

I was in Dallas airport, trying to use their T-Mobile WiFi network. dhcpcd
worked fine and got name servers, gateway, etc. The first site that it
redirects you to worked fine as well. However, clicking on any other link gave
me kernel panics in ieee80211. The same thing happened when I did "lynx
test.com"

------- Comment #14 From Christian Heim (RETIRED) 2007-02-03 07:08:08 0000 -------
Could you guys please unmerge ieee80211, remove your kernel-sources (as in
emerge -C and rm -rf /usr/src/linux), remerge them and then remerge ipw3945 /
ipw3945-ucode (the ~arch'ed version(s)) ?

Please reopen this bug once you have the test-results.

now, I have this system lock ups with ipe3945-1.2.0 and ieee80211 from kernel
:-(, I have reverted to 1.1.3 and ieee80211-1.2.15 :-(
