opengl related - what is your video card, what is your driver? Cany ou please try the other driver? Are you sure dri is setup correctly?

I am using a Radeon X1600XT PCIe adapter with the x11-drivers/ati-drivers, version 8.28.8. DRI is set up and working - at least glxgears gives me approx. 250 fps when running maximized on a 1280x1024 display while running eupdatedb and updatedb.

If you think that I should try the xorg-provided, opensource driver, please tell me. I don't think it will make that much difference, but what do I know.

well I do not know either. This package is binary so only google knows ;)

if you want to try the open source driver to get closer to the problem - feel free .

I'm experiencing the same problem. Google Earth says it's "initializing" and takes forever, using up about 100% CPU (about 80% system, 20% user).

Googleearth worked well until a few weeks ago. After coming back to town there was quite a bunch of updates, including glibc and gcc-4.1.1, but not googleearth. Because of the gcc-4.1.1 update I recompiled the complete system (amd64) with emerge -eav system and emerge -eav world. Then I found out googleearth hangs.

I'm using a ATI X300 (inexpensive PCIe card) with ati-drivers.

you are both on amd64? That could be a reason ..

Maybe an upgrade of /usr/lib32/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so broke it. Try to downgrade the driver version, please.

You are right, Stefan!

In my case ati-drivers was still set to ~amd64 (that was needed some time ago) and I forgot to change that. Downgrading from ati-drivers-8.28.8 to version 2.27.10-r1 solved the problem!

Thanks, Stefan!!!
Comment 8 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-14 02:27:24 UTC
thanks, I changed the ati-drivers depend to <x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.28.8
