The Via VT8237A controller (e.g. Asrock 775Dual-VSTA, Asus M2V) is not supported in gentoo-sources-2.6.17-r7 (unfortunately the 2006.1 livecds too). It's only recently made it into the kernel.org trees:

Fixed in gentoo-sources-2.6.17-r8 (genpatches-2.6.17-10). Thanks for the patches.
