Okay, sorry to ask this the same day as I added it, but there's a problem with your current stable: does not work with kernel 2.6.16.

The patch respect -r3 is minimal, and just relates to that problem, while the general improvements respect the current stable are quite a bit, starting from correct LDFLAGS handling and strict-aliasing safety.
