Description Andreas Faust 2006-05-13 14:48:42 UTC
Hi,
I am using evolution-2.6 with KDE.

but i have quiete som etrouble witrh it.
first, i drops a large amount of error-messages like:
Unknown RESP-CODE encountered: MYRIGHTS
Unknown RESP-CODE encountered: MYRIGHTS
Unknown RESP-CODE encountered: MYRIGHTS
Unknown RESP-CODE encountered: MYRIGHTS

or:
(evolution-2.6:20427): e-data-server-WARNING **: Could not open converter for 'X-UNKNOWN' to 'UTF-8' charset

(evolution-2.6:20427): camel-WARNING **: Could not find key entry for word '8bf9b885e07c3d0b02242a9a9c': Invalid argument

The new icons are only working with gnome desktop ..
no other desktop shows them (bug?)

and finally,
it crashed just a minute ago with:
*** glibc detected *** evolution-2.6: double free or corruption (fasttop): 0xb07062d0 ***
Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0xeeea0)!

I tried to move the content of a folder (22k messages) from maildir to imap.

Comment 4 Lindsay Haisley 2006-05-15 21:04:48 UTC
I get similar instabilities with evolution-2.4, "double free or corruption", "multiple segfault" and similar.

Be sure to save off your ~.evolution directory before upgrading or making any major changes. When you need to restore it, close all processes (including desktop, window manager and any shells) owned by the your account, and log in as root. Remove any files or sockets in /tmp owned by your personal account and then restore your .evolution directory from its saved location. Most of your evolution config should be in place when you restart evolution from your desktop.

Evolution was written by Ximian. Ximian never did have doodly for decent program design, and evolution is no exception. It has _many_ problems! IMHO Linux needs another groupware suite altogether and evolution needs to be consigned to the garbage-bin of e-history.
Comment 5 Paul Giordano 2006-05-25 09:46:20 UTC
On my system, the following fixes these issues (ymmv). Note, only happened after the Gnome upgrades - pretty much suggests that the /usr/lib/evolution/2.6/components directory is not part of the LD path anymore. (watch the artificial wrap on the line below!)

 LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/evolution/2.6/components/libevolution-addressbook.so:/usr/lib/evolution/2.6/components/libevolution-calendar.so:/usr/lib/evolution/2.6/components/libevolution-mail.so evolution

Comment 8 Richard Fish 2006-06-11 19:42:09 UTC
For the icon issue, it looks like gnome-settings-daemon needs to be running in order for the icons to come up with evolution-2.6. But be warned, that may change whatever fonts or other (mouse acceleration) settings you have in KDE.

Gnome-settings-daemon gets installed to /usr/libexec/ as part of gnome-base/control-center. I would suggest gnome-base/control-center be added as an RDEPEND.

BUG - either it should autostart or not be needed.

Gah. Can we motivate upstream to stop breaking stuff randomly?
This bug already happened with evo 2.4, and I really hope they manage to get evo running without absolutely positively needing gnome.

That would noy autostart by default I guess - how would it fix the problem?

Comment 11 Richard Fish 2006-07-04 14:52:13 UTC
I have found a workaround for the icons. It looks like we need to set gtk-fallback-icon-theme in a gtkrc file. For KDE users, using ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is not the best option, since KDE may overwrite that file. Using a private gtkrc, and changing the GTK2_RC_FILES env variable in ~/.bashrc to include the private file seems to be the best option. Note that changing the line that KDE adds to ~/.bashrc will also confuse KDE, so nother line should be added. Example ~/.bashrc:

# This line was appended by KDE
# Make sure our customised gtkrc file is loaded.
export GTK2_RC_FILES=$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0

export GTK2_RC_FILES="${GTK2_RC_FILES}:$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0-private"

And in ~/.gtkrc-2.0-private:
gtk-fallback-icon-theme = "gnome"

Of course, now that I know what the fix is, finding the supporting gnome bugs and links is easy :-(

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=330061
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2006-February/msg00425.html

I'm not sure what Gentoo can do to resolve this....maybe push KDE to add the fallback setting to their generated .gtkrc-2.0, or change the way they set GTK2_RC_FILES to not obliterate the existing setting so you could add the right things to /etc/env.d and /etc/gtk-2.0. But I wouldn't object to this bug being closed as CANTFIX.
Comment 12 Patrick Lauer gentoo-dev 2006-07-05 00:14:22 UTC
To comment #11:
I do have KDE installed, but I don't use it. Any fixes should be generic and apply to all window managers.
Comment 13 Bernd Schmidt 2006-07-13 12:10:10 UTC
I also have a system using KDE, no gnome, and upgraded from evo-2.4 to evo-2.6 today. Result: no icons, no mail folders (had it configured to connect to an exchange server). It starts up printing out:

CalDAV Eplugin starting up ...

** (evolution-2.6:4453): WARNING **: Unexpected kerberos error -1765328164

(evolution-2.6:4453): camel-WARNING **: camel_exception_get_id called with NULL parameter.

After that, just an empty main window. It hangs when you try to close the window.
Comment 14 Stuart Shelton 2006-07-13 15:34:07 UTC
Adding 'gtk-fallback-icon-theme = "gnome"' to /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc fixed the icons problem for me, but there are still other issues with the current evolution-2.6 build:

The View menu has "Sidebar" and "Side Bar" entries. The former seems to do nothing, the latter displays the side bar, *but* the state of this isn't remembered across application restarts.

Also, the option to make a mail-server secure connection if possible has gone, and any accounts which had this selected before upgrade will be reset to use TLS - which likely won't work.
Comment 15 Christophe PEREZ 2006-07-13 21:46:39 UTC
Same error for me, icons broken, but creating ~/.gtkrc-2.0 didn't help.
I don't use gnome, and I suppose a emerge --depclean removed some package needed.
Actually, I'm doing an "emerge -DuvN world" to see if it changes something (12 of 34 packages compiled). Wait&see.
Comment 16 Christophe PEREZ 2006-07-14 09:23:50 UTC
Nothing changed, still broken.

I can tel that "merge --depclean" removed :
x11-libs/motif-config-0.9
x11-themes/gnome-themes-2.12.3
dev-cpp/libgnomecanvasmm-2.12.0
media-libs/gst-plugins-0.8.11
media-plugins/gst-plugins-cdparanoia-0.8.11
x11-themes/gtk-engines-2.6.7
dev-cpp/libgnomemm-2.12.0
dev-cpp/gconfmm-2.12.0
x11-libs/openmotif-2.2.3-r9
dev-cpp/libglademm-2.6.1
dev-cpp/gnome-vfsmm-2.12.0
dev-cpp/libgnomeuimm-2.12.0

and revdep-rebuild emerged :
dev-cpp/libgnomecanvasmm-2.12.0
media-libs/gst-plugins-0.8.11
x11-themes/gtk-engines-2.6.7
dev-cpp/libgnomemm-2.12.0
dev-cpp/gconfmm-2.12.0
dev-cpp/libglademm-2.6.1
dev-cpp/gnome-vfsmm-2.12.0
dev-cpp/libgnomeuimm-2.12.0

So not :
x11-libs/motif-config-0.9
x11-themes/gnome-themes-2.12.3
media-plugins/gst-plugins-cdparanoia-0.8.11
x11-libs/openmotif-2.2.3-r9
x11-themes/gtk-engines-2.6.7

Is it normal I don't have gtk-engines and/or gnome-themes ?

"emerge -DuN world" doesn't install anything more.
Comment 17 Christophe PEREZ 2006-07-14 09:41:44 UTC
emerge gtk-engines gnome-themes solved the problem, but I don't understand why I had to emerge them manually and they are not dependencies.
Comment 18 Richard Fish 2006-07-14 10:19:01 UTC
(In reply to comment #17)
I don't have gnome-themes installed, so that doesn't seem to be an actual dependancy. And removing gtk-engines from my system doesn't break the icons. Normally the icon files are provided by gnome-icon-theme, which _is_ a dependancy. Strange.

that's what I supposed, and why I didn't think I had to emerge them.
Really strange.

I don't have neither, but I created ~/.gtkrc-2.0 without success

Actually I was responding to comment #19, which wasn't clear whether he was talking about my solution or yours.

But yes, if just creating ~/.gtkrc-2.0 doesn't work, it may help to "export GTK2_RC_FILES=$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0" in ~/.bashrc.

But, that's new ? I never had to do something like this before.
I'll try to unmerge gnome-themes, and add GTK2_RC_FILES to see if it works.
PS : sorry for my really bad english.

I have the same issue after upgrading my stable x86 system. In my case I do have an /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc file that contains gtk-fallback-icon-theme = "gnome" as suggested by the upstream bugs. However, the icons are still broken.

another option for people not using GNOME is to set:

/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

with contents:
gtk-fallback-icon-theme = "gnome"

this should work and we should probably be distributing this file with gtk.

@Chris: Can you try doing this?

Thanks, appreciate the quick replies.

Works !
I unemerged gnome-themes and gtk-engines and I always have icons in evolution.

Comment 37 Richard Fish 2006-07-14 14:33:51 UTC
(In reply to comment #35)
> another option for people not using GNOME is to set:

Like I said in comment#11? This might not work for KDE users who set the "Use my KDE style in GTK applications" option, as KDE then creates a ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file and .bashrc entry that causes only the ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file to be used.

At least this was the case on my system. I was not able to get evolution to import the /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc (or any other additional gtkrc) file without modifying the GTK2_RC_FILES variable.
Comment 38 John N. Laliberte (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-14 15:01:12 UTC
@Richard:

Yes, if you have GTK2_RC_FILES set it will never look at ~/.gtkrc-2.0 or /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc unless you set them in GTK2_RC_FILES.

its fine if KDE sets GTK2_RC_FILES, but we should also modify KDE to set /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc when it sets GTK2_RC_FILES.

for example,
GTK2_RC_FILES="~/.gtkrc-2.0:/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"

Do you know what KDE sets in ~/.gtkrc-2.0? Does it use 'gtk-fallback-icon-theme' or 'gtk-icon-theme-name'? It should be setting 'gtk-icon-theme-name' iirc.
Comment 39 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-14 15:50:15 UTC
I did some testing with allanonJL and appending

gtk-icon-theme-name="gnome"

to /usr/share/themes/Qt/gtk-2.0/gtkrc helped for me. The other solutions all had no effect for me :(
I do not have evolution but see the same issue with telepathy ebuilds especially the cohoba application.
Comment 40 Bernd Schmidt 2006-07-14 16:22:32 UTC

Ok... From the original poster:

(evolution-2.6:20427): e-data-server-WARNING **: Could not open converter for
'X-UNKNOWN' to 'UTF-8' charset

This error apparently breaks upgrading a previous addressbook.db to the newer version. In our case, evolution-2.4 to evolution-2.6. As such, in my case, evolution-data-server with bork and contacts with fail to completely be able to viewed (if at all)! The user, after a period of several months, may then realize he/she is missing half or more of their contacts!!

So watch out! make sure you back up your .evolution and .gnome-common (where ever subfolder contact layouts exist for you contacts folder)!

As for me, looks like I have to open another bug for this issue, as well as, consider using Mozilla for my PIM.... this unstability is yanking my cord!

As far as the icon issue, I resolve this by running gnome-theme-manager and choosing my favorite theme (with icons).

Then, ps -ax |grep gnome-settings-daemon

And I put, "/usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon --oaf-ior-fd=27" into my .xprofile (previously known as .xsession file).

<a href="http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=133241#c35">Comment #35</a> works for me. I'm running Xfce.

This worked for me only after I removed the lines that KDE added to my .bashrc that set GTK2_RC_FILES=$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0

I do second that we should include that file with gtk.

Please add /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc to the appropriate ebuild.

I use evolution because of evolution-exchange, but I don't
run any other gnome apps nor do I know how to trouble-shoot
gnome problems (short of hitting bugzilla or the forums).
I have no interest in running any gnome services on my
FVWM desktop, so if these problems can be avoided in the
future by the mere inclusion of /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc with
a reasonable default, please make it happen.

I just committed a gtk revision. we now create this file.

As a side note for people who may read this bug in the future, /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc is not the path for the file if you use a multilib profile. On Gentoo we have patched this behavior in gtk+. The directory could be /etc/gtk-2.0/${CHOST}/gtkrc

As for certain people's situations with KDE or another environment setting the GTK2_RC_FILES in your .bashrc, please file a bug with the appropriate herd and reference this one.

Thanks for everyone's time and comments.
