How about making a new ebuild for the most recent AUC-TeX that has been
released?  
For a long time, AUC-TeX 11.x was alpha/beta quality, but now there is a new
maintainer and it's stable again.

kai, i added 11.13 to portage because it seems to be the latest stable version.
if you think 11.14 is stable enough for everyday usage, let me know and we can
add it also.

it has ~ keywords because of this release freeze.
