as the xdm scripts change in the new version, it needs sessreg as dependencie.

I have the same in xdm.log:

/usr/lib/X11/xdm/GiveConsole: line 11: /usr/bin/sessreg: No such file or
directory

emerging sessreg fixed my problem with x11-apps/xdm-1.0.3-*, x11-apps/xdm-1.0.4
and I can get my session through xdm again.

Ping ia64, s390, xdm is totally broken on your archs until sessreg is
keyworded.
