app-editors/emacs-cvs-22.0.50.ebuild has been removed from the tree, but 22.0.50-r1 is '-*' and 23.0.0 is package masked. emerge --info Portage 2.1_pre5 (default-linux/x86/2006.0, gcc-3.4.5, glibc-2.3.6-r3, 2.6.15-gentoo-r5 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.15-gentoo-r5 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0_pre16 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5, 2.4.2-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=nocona -mtune=nocona -pipe -fstack-protector -fomit-frame-pointer -ggdb" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/bind /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=nocona -mtune=nocona -pipe -fstack-protector -fomit-frame-pointer -ggdb" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms splitdebug strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.intergenia.de http://mirror.ovh.net/gentoo-distfiles/ http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/ http://ftp.lug.ro/gentoo/ http://gentoo.inode.at/" LANG="en_GB.UTF-8" LC_ALL="en_GB.UTF-8" LINGUAS="en_GB" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X a52 aac aalib acl acpi aim alsa apache2 arts audiofile avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts bonobo browserplugin bzip2 bzlib caps cdparanoia cdr cjk crypt cups curl dbus doc dts dvd dvdr dvdread eds emacs emboss encode esd ethereal examples exif expat fam fbcon ffmpeg flac foomaticdb fortran gcj gd gdbm gif glut gmp gnome gnutls gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml guile hal iconv icq idn ieee1394 imagemagick imlib ipv6 jabber jack java javascript jce jpeg junit kde lcms leim libg++ libgda libwww lm_sensors logrotate mad mbox mikmod milter mime mmap mmx mng motif mozilla mp3 mpeg mpi msn ncurses nls nptl nsplugin offensive ogg oggvorbis openal opengl oscar oss pam pcntl pcre pdflib perl png postgres profile python qt quicktime readline recode sdl sharedmem sndfile snmp sockets sox speex spell sse ssl svg sysvipc tcltk tcpd tetex theora threads tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode usb v4l vhosts vorbis win32codecs wmf wxwindows xface xine xml xml2 xmms xv xvid yahoo zlib elibc_glibc kernel_linux linguas_en_GB userland_GNU" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, LDFLAGS
CVS ebuilds are supposed to be masked.
CVS ebuilds aren't stable. Read the changelog.
Eh? According to the Changelog entry, as well as the last comment in the bug it references (#83136), emacs-cvs was supposed to remain available for ~arch.
Accepted that CVS ebuilds should not be marked 'stable', but I am running ~x86 and emacs-cvs-22.0.50-r1 is keyworded '-*' and emacs-cvs-23.0.0 (which is package masked) is from a different (experimental) branch. This leaves NO ebuild at all from the emacs CVS 'head'that will work for any arch. So should emacs-cvs-22.0.50-r1 not have been keyworded '~arch' before removing 22.0.50? Or for 22.0.50 to have been keyworded '~arch' rather than being removed if -r1 is not ready (because of waiting for XFT support).
I don't see what's the issue here, emacs-cvs-23.0.0 has been always package.masked, 22.0.50 has been for some weird reason marked stable (see Bug 83136), which is now fixed. 22.0.50 is -* (not package.masked), since it contains some experimental non-working stuff. TBH, all emacs stuff (not only -cvs) should be just package.masked until the SANDBOX_DISABLED in global scope crap goes away from the ebuilds; see Bug 76141 which has been open for over a year without any attention whatsoever from maintainers' side. :-(

The issue is that, until 22.0.50 was removed there was an ebuild for the emacs CVS trunk. Now that this has been removed, there is no ebuild either package masked or ~arch for the CVS trunk. Had 2.0.50 been keyworded ~arch instead of being removed then there would have been no problem.
Sorry about that. I'm adding back the ~arch version.
Added them back. Between the QA issue, support for XFT, new work towards supporting find-function-C-source and an ISP outage, I erroneously committed the new ebuild with -* instead of the ~arch keywords. Sorry about the confusion.
