Works-for-me bumped ebuild

I basically just added the neon dep, changed the gstreamer deps to use 0.10 and
removed the xine USE option since it's been dropped upstream and GStreamer
works better for me. Seems to work fine.

I had a bit of a root around and found some info in the BMPx forums
http://forum.beep-media-player.org/viewthread.php?tid=171&page=1
but neither of the suggested solutions (removing ~/.bmpx or running
/usr/libexec/bmpx-bin) resolved the problem. The splash screen appears for
about a second then disappears and BMPx doesn't start.

Shame as I quite like the music library thing, will keep an eye on the thread,
and let me know if there is anything I can do to help (although I'm not very
experienced in writing ebuilds).

I rolled up this ebuild for the current snapshot of bmpx. Works for me I'd
appreciate any feedback if it works for other people so I can fix remaining
issues.

------- Comment #5 From Andrew Dorney 2006-03-15 21:58:35 0000 -------
I got two errors... the first was this:

* Fixing OMF Makefiles ...                                               [ ok ]
* Failed to update OMF Makefile ()

The second was this:

checking for HAL... configure: error: Package requirements (hal >= 0.5.6
hal-storage >= 0.5.6) were not met.
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively you may set the HAL_CFLAGS and HAL_LIBS environment variables
to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for
more details.

Considering portage's hal is only 0.5.5.1-r3, this is a problem.

Still a no go here. I'm running this system with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86", but I
guess you may well have quite a large /etc/portage/package.unmask ;-) or have
upgraded to gcc4 or something?

Anyway, this is the error I recieve (and I'm not about to break my system
unmasking glib :D)....

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies -
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy ">=dev-libs/glib-2.10" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:

# GNOME 2.14 mask. You must follow instructions here:
# for adding files from our overlay.
#Most of these packages will break/not compile because of eclass
#changes that won't be made until every package is in the tree.
#Don't unmask these and don't file bugs for them

refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

------- Comment #8 From Felix Braun 2006-03-17 22:50:05 0000 -------
(In reply to comment #6)

Is there any reason why you want to depend on hal-0.5.6 ? As far as I can tell
the configure.ac contained in the rc2 only lists 0.5.5.1 as a requirement. I'll
adapt my ebuild accordingly...

(In reply to comment #7)
bmpx-0.14rc2 depends on glib-2.10.0. There's nothing you can do about that. If
you want to run bleeding edge software, you have to make sacrifices :-)

Alternative ebuild for 0.14rc2

This ebuild should fix the error message about not being able to update OMF
Makefiles.

I've copied a couple of features from Samuli's ebuild too, thanks :-)

Works for me. Please report back with any problems you have.

------- Comment #10 From Christophe Saout 2006-03-18 06:25:28 0000 -------
Just read this in package.mask:

# Martin Schlemmer <azarah@gentoo.org (01 Mar 2006)
# Have multiple issues, and 0.13 release have segfaults (fixed in svn, but
# _only_ after 0.13 release although the fact was known before the 0.13
# release). Either way, no bugfix release was made, and upstream was very
# agro about the fact that I did not still want to add the 0.13 with known
# issues. I dont want to maintain this anymore as working with upstream
# needs a lot of patience and diplomacy, and I do not have the energy any
# longer. I will remove it from the tree if nobody steps up shortly to
# take over.
media-sound/bmpx

I can really understand that he is frustrated. I would be too. Anyway, I just
hacked an ebuild for 0.14rc2 and this is the first version that is working for
me and doesn't randomly crash or does weird things (when just trying to play
some audio files and doing nothing special).

I really like the idea to have a gstreamer based player with a simpe UI as xmms
had (I really don't like the rhythmbox UI). bmp 2 (alias bmpx) really has a way
to go but it starts to be functional again.

I don't know what troubles Azarah had with upstream. But hey, if the package
author urged me to release an ebuild for an obviously broken version I would be
pissed too. Anyway, somebody willing to step in as maintainer?

Hmm, whoops. Posted 0.14.1.1 before reading this or your ebuild. I'm too hasty,
yeah.. indeed you improved it. I'm going to copy your ideas to mine too and
post

------- Comment #18 From Felix Braun 2006-03-19 21:30:23 0000 -------
(In reply to comment #17)

Samuli,

I've noticed the following dependency discrepancies between configure.ac and
your ebuild:

Package |configure.ac | ebuild
==============================
gconf | 2.6.4 | 2.12
hal | 0.5.5.1 | 0.5.6
libxml2 | 2.6.1 | 2.6.18
pckgconf| none | 0.17

Also you DEPEND on pygtk and gtk-doc both of which are not listed as
dependencies in the configure.ac file.

Is there any reason why you introduce these additional dependencies and newer
versions of packages? Especially in the case of hal this causes problems for
people who don't want to unmask the most recent hal.

Of course, I've got a lengthy package.unmask file, so your ebuild works like a
charm here, thanks a lot :-)

Going to drop this from 2.12 to 2.10, lowest 2 series version in portage.

> hal | 0.5.5.1 | 0.5.6

It was 0.5.6, and I asked upstream to drop HAL dep to 0.5.5.1, but I was
unaware the change had been done.

> libxml2 | 2.6.1 | 2.6.18

Lowest version in Portage is 2.6.23..

> pckgconf| none | 0.17

checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes

^ while building BMPx, it's used for building. 0.17 is lowest version in
portage, so it doesn't really matter.. if it's 0.9, or 0.17..

If gtk-doc isn't installed.. build fails (at least failed) in missing command:
gtkdocize

pygtk is/was for example client and addons, it isn't mandatory. so I'm removing
this dependency. but.. people will needed it, afterwards, if they want addons.

You were right about this, gtk-doc is only needed for SVN build, not release
build. Fixing.

This is fixed now in upstream, but in little different way so it doesn't break
build with Gamin. Thanks for reporting.

Sending ebuild for release BMPx 0.14.1.2 with a working patch in a minute..

Try if you get more output from command "/usr/libexec/beep-media-player-2-bin
--nolog"

Err. Typing error from me.

Valid command is /usr/libexec/beep-media-player-2-bin --no-log

Sorry, but after a good night's sleep the error has disappeared. I still have
absolutely NO idea what it was or why it fixed itself. Computers, eh?

There appears to be a bug in BMPx, corrupted playlist. It can be fixed by
disabling, and then enabling item back in Preferences, playlist.

Upstream has been informed.

Hah, indeed. Apparently "The Playlist Bug" I've just mentioned, was probably
old gconf -data in my own system.. and problem was gone after starting BMPx
0.14.2 for
first time.

*shrug*

cleaned up bmpx-0.14.2.ebuild with streaming

USE="stream" to pull gst-plugins-neon for streaming support. Cleaned up a
little bit. Also fixed a double dep on gst-plugins-ogg. If vorbis really should
have that dep, add it back. I just didn't see reason for a double dep.

Not yet, reason I was keeping it only in einfo w/ information about
gst-plugins-gnomevfs is BMPx 0.14.2 doesn't work properly with gst-plugins-neon
0.10.1, from gst-plugins-bad. It needs a CVS version, sorry I didn't mention
this in bugzilla before. Or didn't add a proper comment on my ebuild.

Right about that, I don't see a reason to keep duplicate. That was a dirty copy
and paste from /usr/portage/media-video/totem/totem-1.4.0.ebuild and I was
thinking they know a proper reason :)

Like these,

                                theora? (

                                vorbis? (

Ogg is a container.. only container that I know can hold vorbis, and theora
formats inside.

AFAIK!

I get an error similar to this when trying to play all MP4/M4A/AAC files. I
initially thought it was a gstreamer bug, but it must be BMPx because totem can
play them fine. Have tried recompling and all that malarky, and other formats
work. This one has me baffled!

And like my last bug it started working again for no reason. I'm determined to
work out what's going on here, the minute i file a bug it decides to work, but
if it doesn't work every time then that's no good is it?

BMPx 0.14.3

* Added USE="cdparanoia"

* Removed USE="gnome" for gconf installation, causing troubles like..

BMPx-Message: Image file '/usr/share/bmpx/icons/themes' contains no data

..for some people. DEBUGME. FIXME. Forced libxml2 use as time being.

NOTE, gst-plugins-neon is too old for this release of BMPx, use
gst-plugins-gnomevfs for radio streaming..

media-sound/bmpx-0.14.3 now in portage, but is currently in package.mask
because it depends on >=dev-libs/glib-2.10 which is in the Gnome 2.14 mask.
