Can you please add a warning or even better, some check that the 
madwifi/wpa_supplicant versions match? Would've saved some time... appears I'm
not the first to be caught out (http://madwifi.org/ticket/386). Thanks.

There is already a notice about this in wpa_supplicant (and hostapd). Would you
like one in madwifi-driver as well?

Yes because the relationship goes both ways - if madwifi-driver gets version
bumped and recompiled, the user needs to recompile wpa_supplicant.
