which is not there in linux-2.6.15, so it fails ...

Could you please post the actual error messages?  It isn't very helpful to just hear "it's broken" with no context/errors to look at.

sorry, i thought it is obvious ...

Makefile:449: /usr/src/linux-2.6.15-gentoo-r1/arch/x86/Makefile: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
my environment is german, the message means: file or directory not found. 
so i wrote "genkernel 3.3.11_pre6 wants a nonexistent arch/x86 subdirectory ..." 

genkernel 3.3.10 works OK in the same situation btw.
