What's about adding a feature to use the USE flag "logrotate" in the ntp ebuild
in the same mannse as it's used eg in the acpid - ebuilds ? The logrotate def
file could have the same contents as this :

n22 /usr/portage/net-misc/ntp # cat /etc/logrotate.d/snort

/var/log/snort/alert {
  daily
  rotate 7
  nocompress
}
