home ~ # emerge duke3d
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) games-fps/duke3d-20040817 to /

...

>>> /usr/share/games/duke3d/USER.CON
>>> /usr/share/games/duke3d/GAME.CON
 * Remember, in order to play games, you have to
 * be in the 'games' group.

 * Just run 'gpasswd -a <USER> games'

 * For more info about Gentoo gaming in general, see our website:
 *    http://games.gentoo.org/

 * Just put the data files in /usr/share/games/duke3d
 * before playing !
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...

IMO it will be really helpful if the ebuild provided a list of the required
data files, instead of just saying "the data files".

why dont you post the list of data files

ive just copied all the files from my duke3d game into the dir, never narrowed
it down since there didnt seem much point

Ok, the required data file seems to be duke3d.grp only. The .dmo files (
demo1.dmo, demo2.dmo here ) should be also noted as optional, as AFAIK they are
not strictly required and currently they not working [1], but may work some day
so would be nice to have.

[1] /usr/share/doc/duke3d-20040817/readme.txt.gz:

- The original .DMO demo files do not work. However recording new ones and
playing those back does work, sometimes. I've disabled playback of demos in the
source for stability when people first try to run their compiled version. It
shouldn't be too hard to find how to re-enable it for those who want to go in
and fix it.

Changed the ebuild to explains how to install the shareware version.
