Can hardened and embedded verify that libutemtper works better than utempter on
their set ups.  See bug #75943 for an example of utempter's brokenness.  If you
guys verify, then please switch your virtuals files to reflect that, and I'll
then make xterm hard depend on libutempter with an eye to removing utempter
(which isn't maintained upstream) from portage entirely

profiles/uclibc is already using libutempter ... we have been for a while

as for profiles/embedded, dont worry about that ... it's currently a dead
profile

It's only set for the selinux profile, not the hardened profiles (which inherit it from base).
