This version even builds with jdk 1.5 while 2.6.2 doesn't :-)

Did you simply copy the ebuilds and patches to 2.7.1? I'm trying to build with 
blackdown-jdk-1.4, but I get a lot of unresolved symbols. They seem to be 
related to JAXP from what I can tell.

Fixed in CVS. Thanks for reporting! 
 
On a side note, this uses a new package I added, xml-commons-external. I was 
only able to test xml-commons-external on amd64 and x86, and so I had to drop 
keywords for all the archs except those for the new xerces.
