Description Alexander Skwar 2005-11-19 07:03:41 UTC
I'm having a problem with transcode 1.0.x (1.0.1 and 1.0.2).
When I run it, I get the following error message:

*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (!prev): 0x08061060 ***

Command that I ran:

$ transcode  -H 10 -o snapshot -y ppm,null -x vob,null -i /data/Kingdom/vob/001
-c 4-5 -L 1727299

Here's the complete output:

This command works with tc 0.6.14 and the same input data.

I'm on a Gentoo Linux system and compiled tc "myself" using the Gentoo transcode
portage system.

I (or rather the system) ran:

./configure --prefix=/usr --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc
--localstatedir=/var/lib --disable-altivec --disable-netstream
--disable-freetype2 --disable-v4l --disable-lame --disable-ogg --disable-vorbis
--disable-theora --disable-libdvdread --disable-libdv --disable-libquicktime
--disable-lzo --disable-a52 --disable-libmpeg3 --disable-libxml2
--disable-mjpegtools --disable-sdl --disable-gtk --disable-libfame
--disable-imagemagick --disable-libjpeg --with-mod-path=/usr/lib/transcode
--without-x --without-libpostproc-builddir --disable-mmx --disable-3dnow
--disable-sse --disable-sse2 --disable-avifile --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu

CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

To be able to debug, I downloaded CVS head and compiled it
with the above mentioned configure options and

CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -g"

I then ran the transcode command shown at the beginning of this report - and it
worked!

Next, I compiled 1.0.2 with no patches or anything using just the plain source
from transcoding.org. I compiled it with the above configure command and

CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -g"

After having done so, I ran (per
<http://www.transcoding.org/cgi-bin/transcode?Reporting_Crashes>):

This command/call makes transcode 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 die with the error message
"*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (!prev): 0x08061060 ***" on my
system. 0.6.14 and CVS HEAD work.

What's broken and how do I fix it?

Thanks,

Oh, yes, you're right. Sorry about that...

In the meantime, I noticed that it works when building with "USE=-*". Normally,
I build it with:

[ebuild   R   ] media-video/transcode-1.0.2  -3dnow -X -a52 (-altivec) -dv
+dvdread -fame +ffmpeg -gtk -imagemagick +jpeg -lzo -mjpeg -mmx +mp3 +mpeg
-network +ogg -pvm -quicktime +sdl +sse +sse2 +theora -truetype -v4l +vorbis
-xml2 +xvid 0 kB

I now compiled transode with LDFLAGS='', and it still crashes.
Comment 4 Alexander Skwar 2005-11-20 01:12:12 UTC
Works, when built with the following USE flags:

 -dvdread -ffmpeg -jpeg -mp3 -mpeg -ogg -sdl -sse -sse2 -theora -vorbis -xvid
          -ffmpeg -jpeg -mp3 -mpeg -ogg -sdl -sse -sse2 -theora -vorbis -xvid
                  -jpeg -mp3 -mpeg -ogg -sdl -sse -sse2 -theora -vorbis -xvid
                        -mp3 -mpeg -ogg -sdl -sse -sse2 -theora -vorbis -xvid
                             -mpeg -ogg -sdl -sse -sse2 -theora -vorbis -xvid
                                   -ogg -sdl -sse -sse2 -theora -vorbis -xvid
                                        -sdl -sse -sse2 -theora -vorbis -xvid
                                             -sse -sse2 -theora -vorbis -xvid
                                                  -sse2 -theora -vorbis -xvid
                                                        -theora -vorbis -xvid
                                                                -vorbis -xvid
                                                                        -xvid

And also with no "-USE-Flag"....

Oh, how I had that... :( Why is it now all of a sudden working? I now build it
like that:

[ebuild   R   ] media-video/transcode-1.0.2  -3dnow -X -a52 (-altivec) -dv
+dvdread -fame +ffmpeg -gtk -imagemagick -jpeg -lzo -mjpeg +mmx +mp3 +mpeg
-network +ogg -pvm -quicktime +sdl +sse +sse2 +theora -truetype -v4l +vorbis
-xml2 +xvid 0 kB

And that *$!?* is working?

Well, for whatever reason, I can no longer reproduce that bug. I don't get it...

Closing bug.
Comment 5 Alexander Skwar 2005-11-20 04:28:02 UTC
Reopening.

But I now found something.... What I found is,
that I was too clever for my own good. I ran the command
as shown above - *BUT* in reality, "Kingdom" in /data is
a symlink to some place else. And in dvd::rip, that "some
place else" is used. That "some place else" is actually a
rather long path, which is why I shortened it for the bug
report.

alexander@blatt ~ $ ls -la /data/King*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 69 19. Nov 11:23 /data/Kingdom ->
media/Encoding/dvdrip/data/Kingdom_of_Heaven_-_Koenigreich_der_Himmel

WORKING:

alexander@blatt /tmp/dvdrip6801.ppm $ transcode  -H 10 -o snapshot -y ppm,null
-x vob,null -i /data/Kingdom/vob/001 -c 4-5 -L 1727299

*NOT* working:

alexander@blatt /tmp/dvdrip6801.ppm $ transcode  -H 10 -o snapshot -y ppm,null
-x vob,null -i \

/data/media/Encoding/dvdrip/data/Kingdom_of_Heaven_-_Koenigreich_der_Himmel/vob/001
-c 4-5 -L 1727299

It seems, that "something" has a problem with that rather long path of
/data/media/Encoding/dvdrip/data/Kingdom_of_Heaven_-_Koenigreich_der_Himmel/vob/001.

"Luckily", also

alexander@blatt /tmp/dvdrip6801.ppm $ /dev/shm/tc/cvs/install/prog/bin/transcode
--version
transcode v1.1.0-cvs (C) 2001-2003 Thomas Oestreich, 2003-2004 T. Bitterberg

breaks with that long path. I'm too lazy to checkout 0.6.14 - sorry.

Can you try to report this upstream? Transcode is a quite complex package, and
the less I have to tinker with it, the more happy I am usually ^^;

Patch making tc 1.0.2 not die anymore

Hi.
Oh sorry, I should have updated this bug...

I reported this issue upstream and somebody wrote a patch (actually, a backport
from CVS HEAD to 1.0.x). You can find it originally at
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.transcode.user/18446 or in the
attached file.

I'm using the attached patch, and everything is fine for me :)
Comment 8 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-08 06:32:42 UTC
Thanks, I'll give that a try and commit it later today.
Comment 9 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-10 08:07:24 UTC
Fixed in 1.0.2-r1.
