I tested the patch given in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101154#c7 and
made a gentoo equivalent patch and ebuild in my PORTDIR_OVERLAY directory.

add the following line in src_unpack() before the make -f admin... statement:

epatch "${FILESDIR}/kdebase-3.4.2-kinfocenter-opengl-fix.patch"

Using this ebuild I made I re-installed kdebase and now selecting opengl works
in the kinfocenter.
