I've seen this also. I just patched it myself into x11-libs/vte-0.11.15 and it works fine. It stops a LOT of nasty warnings for me.
The following also have this issue: media-sound/grip-3.3.0 media-sound/grip-3.3.1
Dorrin and Ira, I've added the fix to vte-0.11.15-r1 in portage, thanks for your work here and the relevant links/patches. Roger, please file a bug with the sound herd for grip, referencing this bug. It'll be most helpful if you can supply a patch - the details of how to fix this are in the vte patch attached here.
