The default fonts.conf file that comes with the fontconfig distribution attempts to provide italic versions of fonts for which there is no italic font file by applying a matrix transform. Unfortunately, the matrix provided in the configuration file is incorrect, and results in fonts slanting up instead of right. Several others have seen this problem, as reported in forums here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=19268 Was unable to find another bug for this problem, will attach patch to correct fontconfig
Created attachment 5245 [details, diff] patch to correct XFree4.2.1 + fontconfig This patch alters the matrix applied to non-italic fonts when no italic font file is present to generate correct italic fonts.

Fixed.
strange, for me reverting this patch fixes the problem
I am sad to say he is right. Foser, can you think of anything that could have 'fixed' the problem ? Maybe latest patches to freetype ?
I'm not even CC on this bug (and just by accident ended up here ;)). But no not really a clue but im drowsy right now, that doesn't help either :) Some of the freetype patches look like they could be fixing this sort of problem. Can't be xfree really, that uses its own freetype isn't it ?

Just had this happen to me with the latest version of everything and a Gentoo install less than three weeks old. The patch worked, but isn't included in the latest packages.
What versions of freetype, xft, fontconfig ?
And with what fonts does this happen exactly ?
just found this open with questions long enough
Looks like this was closed before. Reclosing.
